Terms of use

The agreement between you and Shefa when you send or receive money with us, in plain words.

Effective from [Effective date]Last updated [Last updated date]

About these terms

These terms cover your use of the Shefa app and website to send and receive money. Shefa is a trading name of [Company legal name], registered in [Country of registration] with company number [Company number]. Our registered address is [Registered address].

By opening an account you agree to these terms. Please read them together with our Privacy notice.

Who moves your money

Payment services are provided by Payaza and its licensed partners in each market where Shefa operates. Who they are and how they are regulated is set out on our Licensing and regulatory disclosures page.

Who can use Shefa

You can open an account if you:

  • are 18 or older
  • live in the UK, the US ([Supported states]) or Canada ([Supported provinces])
  • use an account, card or wallet in your own name to pay
  • pass our identity checks

You can send to people in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya. Not every way of receiving money is available in every country.

Your account and identity checks

The law requires us to confirm who you are before you send money abroad. We may ask for photo ID, a selfie, proof of address and, for larger amounts, where the money comes from. We may pause a transfer while we check.

Keep your sign-in details to yourself. We will never ask for your password or a one-time code. If you think someone else has used your account, tell us straight away at [Contact email].

Sending money

Before you pay, we show you the amount you send, our fee, the exchange rate and exactly what your recipient gets. The transfer is made when you confirm it.

  • Check the recipient’s details. If they are wrong, we will try to get the money back but cannot promise to.
  • Delivery times in the app are estimates. Banks, mobile money providers and our checks can add time.
  • Limits on how much you can send are [Sending limits], and may depend on the checks you have completed.

Receiving money and your wallet

Where available, people in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya can pay into your Shefa wallet. [How wallet balances are held, protected and withdrawn, and by whom].

Fees and exchange rates

Our fee and exchange rate are shown before you pay. We hold the rate for the time shown on your quote. If the quote runs out, you get a new one before you pay.

[How Shefa makes money: the fee, a margin on the exchange rate, or both]. Your bank, card provider or your recipient’s provider may charge their own fees, which we do not control.

Cancellations and refunds

You can cancel free in the app until the money leaves for your recipient’s bank or mobile wallet. After that, contact us and we will try to help.

If a transfer cannot be delivered, we refund it to [Your wallet or how you paid] within [Refund timeframe]. [Who bears any exchange rate difference].

What you must not do

  • use Shefa for anything illegal, including fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing or getting around sanctions
  • send money on someone else’s behalf without telling us
  • give us false or misleading information
  • try to interfere with or misuse the app or website

Suspending or closing your account

You can close your account at any time. We may refuse a transfer, or suspend or close your account, if the law requires it, if we suspect fraud or other crime, or if you break these terms. We will tell you why unless the law stops us. Closing your account does not cancel a transfer already on its way.

Our responsibility to you

If a transfer goes wrong because of our mistake, we will refund the amount and our fee. [Any other amounts the law requires us to pay].

We are not responsible for losses caused by:

  • wrong details you gave us
  • delays by banks or mobile money providers that we do not control
  • events outside our reasonable control
  • losses we could not reasonably have foreseen

Nothing in these terms limits any responsibility that cannot be limited by law, or takes away your legal rights as a consumer.

Complaints

If something goes wrong, tell us. Our complaints page explains how we handle complaints and where you can go if you are not happy with our answer.

Changes to these terms

We will give you [Notice period] notice by email or in the app before changing these terms, unless a change is needed sooner by law. If you do not agree, you can close your account before the change takes effect.
